For subcutaneous use only. Anterior half of neck.
Cattle and sheep may be vaccinated at any age. Lambs are most conveniently vaccinated at marking or docking time, and calves from six weeks of age onwards.
Cattle including calves: 2mL dose followed by a second dose of 2mL four to six weeks later.
A booster dose of 2mL given 12 months after the two basic doses of vaccine should confer lifelong immunity against tetanus and blackleg. To maintain effective immunity against black disease, annual booster doses of Ultravac SD 6 in 1 should be given.
The two basic doses of Ultravac SD 6 in 1 should provide effective immunity against enterotoxaemia for three months. Booster doses are therefore necessary to maintain immunity against enterotoxaemia (pulpy kidney disease) in cattle and should be given at appropriate intervals according to local and seasonal conditions.
Sheep including lambs: 1mL dose followed by a second dose of 1mL four to six weeks later.
Young lambs may be vaccinated whilst being held during marking operations. Older sheep including pregnant ewes, are most conveniently vaccinated while they are standing in a race.
A booster dose of 1mL given 12 months after the two basic doses of vaccine should confer lifelong immunity against tetanus and blackleg, but may not do so against enterotoxaemia (pulpy kidney disease) or black disease. Further annual doses may be required to maintain effective immunity against these diseases in areas where the risks from the disease are known to be high.
Pregnant ewes: If the ewes have not been previously vaccinated, a 1mL dose should be given at the time of mating and a second dose of 1mL should be given within four weeks of the expected date of lambing. If the ewes have been previously vaccinated with Ultravac SD 6 in 1, the dose at the time of mating may be omitted. Successfully vaccinated pregnant ewes will not only be protected themselves but will also pass on immunity to their lambs in the colostrum or ‘first milk’. In this way, lambs should be protected for the first 6 to 8 weeks of their lives against these diseases*.
Development of immunity: Immunity develops about 10 days after vaccination. The second dose, given four to six weeks after the first should ensure a high level of immunity against the diseases covered by the vaccine.
Use of Antitoxin: If immediate short-term protection is required to counter an outbreak of tetanus, antitoxin should be used. Although antitoxin may be useful in controlling an outbreak of tetanus, its usefulness is limited owing to the shortness of the protective action.
Contents must be left in the outer package until immediately before use. Shake well before use and keep thoroughly mixed during use. This product can be stored and used for up to 30 days after first opening. Handle aseptically and store refrigerated and protected from light. When not in use during any given vaccination session, keep the vaccine out of direct sunlight and as cool as possible. Do not leave exposed to light or at high temperatures for long periods. Ideally, place the vaccine pack into the original cardboard carton and place in either a chilly bin with an icebrick or in a refrigerator.
Caution: Avoid carcase damage:
- Sterilise all injection apparatus by boiling in water for 10 minutes (or equivalent) before use. Avoid use of strong disinfectants on apparatus.
- Maintain cleanliness at all times during vaccination. Great care must be taken to avoid contamination of the vaccine, needle and internal parts of the syringe by contact with unsterile surfaces or unwashed hands.
- Keep needles sharp and clean. Replace frequently.
- Use the shortest possible needle, not exceeding 15mm in length.
- As far as possible avoid injection of animals during wet weather or under dusty conditions.Animals should preferably be inoculated in temporary yards on clean grass, as shearing sheds and fixed mustering yards are likely to be heavily contaminated with clostridial spores.
- This product must be injected only under the skin (subcutaneously).
- If possible inject high on the neck behind the ear, i.e. under the skin on the side of the neck (just behind and below the base of the ear). Do not inject at any other site.
Store unused material upright at 2°C to 8°C (refrigerate; do not freeze) in the original cardboard packaging to protect from light. Shake well before use and keep thoroughly mixed during use. This product can be stored and used for up to 30 days after first opening. When not in use during any given vaccination session, keep the vaccine out of direct sunlight and as cool as possible. Do not leave exposed to light or at high temperatures for long periods. Ideally, place the vaccine pack into the original cardboard carton and place in either an esky with an icebrick or in a refrigerator.
Withholding periods Meat/Milk: Nil
*In the case of Clostridium sordellii, the time of onset of immunity, duration of immunity, or transfer of passive immunity to lambs/calves has not been established.
