Orbenin Enduro

Orbenin Enduro Dry Cow Intramammary Suspension is specially prepared for treatment of the dry cow. Orbenin Enduro is bactericidal with activity against streptococci, penicillin resistant and sensitive staphylococci and Corynebacterium pyogenes.

  • Orbenin Enduro maintains effective antibiotic levels in the udder for up to seven weeks in the dry period. As a result of this persistence, it is necessary to recommend a minimum dry period of 35 days.

The main purpose of dry cow antibacterial therapy is to treat subclinical mastitis at drying off. The use of routine dry cow therapy has been shown to achieve high levels of control of mastitis in the herd at calving. It eliminates almost all the streptococcal infections and a majority of the staphylococcal infections caused by penicillin-resistant as well as sensitive organisms. Since the treatment is administered during the dry period there is no requirement to discard milk.

Orbenin Enduro is active against Gram+ve organisms associated with mastitis. It is effective against Streptococcus agalactiae and other streptococcal species, penicillin-resistant and penicillin-sensitive staphylococci and Corynebacterium pyogenes. Unlike natural penicillins, cloxacillin is not destroyed by staphylococcal penicillinase. It is therefore active against penicillin-resistant staphylococci, which are an important cause of mastitis. The cloxacillin benzathine retains its activity over a prolonged period and, in the long-acting base, maintains effective antibacterial levels in the mammary glands of the dry cow for approximately 7 weeks. The antibiotic is bactericidal at the concentrations found in the udder after administration and therefore kills all the susceptible micro-organisms present at the time of dosing.

  • Orbenin Enduro is a stable suspension containing 600mg dynomilled cloxacillin in a long-acting mineral oil base.

It is presented in syringes suitable for intramammary infusion and is designed to be used in the dairy cow at drying off i.e. immediately after the last milking of the lactation.

The combined effects of the relatively insoluble benzathine salt and the long acting base give an extended period of activity for seven weeks in the dry cow.

Orbenin Enduro is available in bins of 120 x 3.6g syringes.

  • Administer the contents of one syringe per quarter immediately after the final milking of a lactation. At the end of lactation, milk the cow out normally. Clean and disinfect the teat, infuse the contents of one syringe into each quarter and leave without milking out. Orbenin Enduro treatment can be followed by administration of TEATSEAL® (ACVM No. A7294) to provide further protection from new intramammary infections. It is normally unnecessary and undesirable to introduce any further treatment during the dry period. Lactating cow products such as Orbenin L.A. (ACVM A3664) should be used if re-treatment is required during the dry period.

  • Dry cow therapy should be used at drying off only. Treatment to be at least 35 days before calving. Orbenin Dry Cow must not be used for the treatment of the lactating cow. If a lactating cow is accidentally infused, milk must be withheld from the bulk supply for 35 days.

Since the period of activity of the formulation is prolonged, it is important that this preparation is not used for the occasional cow which may have a very short dry period of less than 35 days. This will avoid contamination of the milk after the colostrum has been removed. In such cases Orbenin L.A. (ACVM No. A3664) may be used at drying off.

    Withholding Periods:

Milk: Milk for human consumption must not be taken from the first 8 milkings after calving. If calving occurs before 35 days after the last treatment, milk to be sold for human consumption may only be taken after the full 35 days from treatment and a further 8 milkings have elapsed. If a lactating cow is accidentally infused, milk must be withheld from the bulk supply for 35 days.

Meat: Cows producing meat and offal for human consumption must not be sold for slaughter during treatment or within 28 days of the last treatment.

Bobby Calves: When a calf is given colostrum from a treated cow that has calved within the 35-day withholding period this calf must, subsequently, be fed milk that does not contain antibiotic residues and withheld from slaughter for 7 days.

Penicillins may cause hypersensitivity (allergy) following inhalation, ingestion or skin contact. Do not handle this product if you know you are sensitised to, or if you have been advised not to work with, such preparations. Handle this product with great care to avoid exposure, taking all recommended precautions, including the use of suitable protective clothing and gloves.
