For the control of the oestrus cycle in maiden heifers and parous cows to enable synchronisation for concentrated artificial insemination (AI) or embryo collection and transfer programmes. Treatment of post-partum and suckling anovulatory anoestrum (non-cycling) cows.
Recent trial work1 shows early treatment with CIDR brings forward the conception date of the CIDR group by 10-16 days. This means 10-16 more days in milk per CIDR cow.
Progesterone suppresses oestrus and ovulation in cycling animals and primes the hypothalamo-pituitary axis in non-cycling (anoestrus) animals. Removal of the insert and the subsequent fall in progesterone level allows a surge in LH pulse frequency, follicle maturation and a predictable oestrus and ovulation to occur.
