Dexdomitor is a sedative, analgesic for use in the restraint of dogs and cats and can be used as a pre-anaesthetic with all commonly injected or inhaled anaesthetics.

  • DEXDOMITOR is indicated for use as a sedative and analgesic in dogs and cats to facilitate clinical examinations, clinical procedures, minor surgical procedures and mild to moderately painful non-invasive proedures. Also indicated for use as a preanesthetic in dogs and cats prior to general anesthesia. Approved for use in dogs as young as 16 weeks of age and cats as young as 12 weeks of age.

Dexmedetomidine hydorcholoride is a synthetic alpha-2 adrenoreceptor agonist that acts extremely selectively and potently on alpha-2 adrenoreceptors, inhibiting the release of noradrenaline. This prevents the transmission of nerve impulses, causing a loss of pain sensations and a decrease in the level of consciousness. Marked synergistic activity has been reported between dexmedetomidine and cyclohexamine compounds such as ketamine, and between opiate drugs such as fentanyl and butorphanol (Torbgesic), producing deep anaesthesia.

    • Potent analgesia with rapid onset
    • Depth and duration of sedation is dose dependent
    • Good muscle relaxation and greatly reduced hypersensitivity to noise
    • Offers greater flexibility and stress-free handling of sedated patients
    • Allows smooth and predictable recovery when Antisedan® is administered
  • Dexdomitor is a clear, colourless solution for injection, containing 0.5 mg/mL dexmedetomidine hydrochloride.

Dexdomitor is available in 10 mL vials.

  • For parenteral use by i/m or i/v injection in dogs and i/m injection in cats.

Maximum effect is obtained within 10–15 minutes. Duration of the clinically useful effect is dose related (30–180 minutes). The dose can be repeated if necessary.

When Dexdomitor is used as a pre-anaesthetic, the dose of the anaesthetic agents subsequently administered can be reduced by as much as 60%.

Store below 30°C (room temperature) and protect from light.

  • Due to the mode of action of Dexdomitor, in common with all alpha-2 agonists, heart and respiratory rate and body temperature will decrease. Blood pressure will initially increase then return to normal or slightly below. Treated animals should be kept warm in an even temperature for 12 hours after sedation. Approximately 10% of dogs and 50% of cats may vomit 5–10 minutes post injection, some cats also on recovery.

Use in pregnancy has not been monitored in sufficient animals and thus cannot be recommended. Domitor should not be used in conjunction with sympathomimetic amines.

Care should be taken with the use of Domitor in animals with cardiovascular, respiratory, liver and kidney disease or in animals in poor general health. The concomitant use of other CNS depressants should be expected to potentiate the depressant effects of either product and appropriate dose adjustments should be made. The effects of Domitor can be reversed by Antisedan (A6178). The administration of anticholinergic agents (atropine or glycopyrrolate) to treat bradycardia either simultaneously or following medetomidine could lead to adverse cardiovascular effects.

Not to be used in food producing species of animals. Skin contact should be avoided. Repeated oral exposure to high doses may affect the human nervous system.
