TREATMENT PROTOCOLS FOR SHEEP

Oestrous Synchronisation

A synchrony system aims to precisely concentrate the onset of oestrous while optimising fertility. The table below shows the protocol for treatment of sheep within the breeding season.

Sheep Oestrous Programme

Highlights of the synchronisation protocol:

  • Administer the CIDR Sheep and Goat Insert for 12 to 14 days.
  • The injection of 200 to 300 IU of eCG (equine chorionic gonadotrophin/PMSG) at insert removal may be advantageous early in the breeding season.
  • Oestrous response rate should exceed 95 percent.
  • The presence of a ram significantly improves response.

Mating options include:

  • Natural mating using at least 10 percent of rams.
  • Cervical artificial insemination with fresh semen to detected oestrus.
  • Laparoscopic artificial insemination with fresh or frozen semen at 48 to 52 hours after insert removal.

Out of Season Breeding

The following table shows the protocol for breeding sheep out of season:

Out Of Season Programme

Highlights of the out-of-season breeding protocol:

  • Oestrous response rate should exceed 95 percent.
  • Conception rates will be lower than for mating within the breeding season.
  • Fertility will improve closer to the start or end of the breeding season.
  • Many factors can influence fertility including breed, class, age and weight of the ewe, month of treatment, ram selection and management.

Mating options include:

  • Natural mating using at least 10 percent of rams.
  • Laparoscopic artificial insemination with fresh or frozen semen at 44 to 48 hours after insert removal.
