The most effective and profitable way to deal with mastitis in the long term is by preventative measures; these will not eliminate the disease but they will reduce the number of new cases in the herd.
The main preventative measures are:
- The correct use of an efficient, well-adjusted milking machine.
- Use of hygienic methods during and after milking each cow, including disinfection of the teats after each milking.
- A tailored dry cow programme.
