Expand All
  • Doxycycline is an advanced analogue of the tetracycline family of antibiotics with broad-spectrum activity against Gram+ve and Gram-ve bacteria, including penicillinase-producers and anaerobes as well as Chlamydophila spp and Mycoplasma spp.

Indications include skin infections such as pyoderma, and folliculitis; respiratory infections such as tracheobronchitis, bronchitis and pneumonia; urogenital infections such as cystitis and pyelonephritis; otitis externa and otitis media; gastrointestinal tract infections; osteomyelitis and puerperal infections.

Activity has been demonstrated against a wide range of bacterial organisms including Staphylococcus spp, Streptococcus, E. coli, Pasteurella spp, Haemophilus spp, Clostridia spp, Listeria spp, Bacteroides spp, Bordetella spp, Klebsiella spp. and others.

  • Key features of VibraVet are:

    • Absorption via the oral route is virtually complete and extremely rapid. As a result, serum levels of doxycycline reach concentrations comparable to those following intravenous administration and maintenance doses after the first day are much reduced.
    • Lower affinity for calcium (than other tetracyclines).
    • Can be administered to patients with severe renal dysfunction because the primary route of excretion of doxycycline is through the enteric route.
    • Highly lipophilic resulting in efficient tissue penetration.
    • Can be administered with food or milk without markedly impairing its absorption.
    • Wide safety margin and can be used long-term and in kittens and puppies from 1 month of age.
    • Long half-life and once a day dosing after the initial loading doses.
    • Palatable paste presented in pre-calibrated, dose measured syringe which is easy to dispense and administer and maximises owner (and animal) compliance.
    • Available in a choice of three convenient presentations - 100mg paste and 50mg or 100mg tablets.

  • The use of tetracyclines in newborn animals may lead to permanent yellow staining of teeth. Avoid using doxycycline in pregnant animals in the last 3 weeks of pregnancy and in newborn animals during the first month of life.

Doxycycline is virtually non-toxic in dogs and cats. Vomiting may occur as an uncommon side effect, however this can be avoided by administering this product with food.

Antacids containing aluminium, calcium and magnesium salts may affect the absorption of doxycycline and therefore should not be given to animals treated concurrently with VibraVet.
