Excenel RTU

Excenel RTU is a broad spectrum antibiotic for the treatment of respiratory infections in cattle and pigs, bovine foot rot and acute metritis in cattle.

Excenel RTU Sterile Suspension contains ceftiofur hydrochloride equivalent to 50 mg ceftiofur per mL. Ceftiofur is a broad spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic that is active against Gram+ve and Gram-ve bacteria including ß-lactamase producing strains. Like other cephalosporins, ceftiofur is antibacterial in vitro with this action resulting from inhibition of cell wall synthesis.

  • Cattle: Excenel RTU Sterile Suspension is indicated for treatment of the following bacterial diseases:

    • Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD) associated with Pasteurella haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida and Haemophilus somnus.
    • Acute bovine interdigital necrobacillosis (foot rot) associated with Fusobacterium necrophorum and Bacteroides melaninogenicus.
    • Acute metritis (0 to 14 days post partum) associated with bacterial organisms susceptible to ceftiofur.

Pigs: Excenel RTU Sterile Suspension is indicated for treatment of swine bacterial respiratory disease associated with Haemophilus pleuropneumonia, Pasteurella multocida, Salmonella choleraesuis and Streptococcus suis type 2.

  • Nil milk withhold: Excenel is a unique antibiotic that binds to large proteins in blood as it is transported around the body. These proteins are too large to pass into the udder so there’s no risk of milk contamination when used at approved dosage – which means there’s no need to withhold the treated cows’ milk.

    Efficacious:

    • In a clinical trial determining the effectiveness of Excenel in the treatment of interdigital necrobacillosis (footrot) in cattle, 92% of cows were successfully cured1.
    • Excenel efficacy against acute post-partum metritis was demonstrated in a recent trial2.
    • In the treatment of bovine respiratory disease (BRD) in calves, Excenel (100% cure rate) was better than oxytetracycline (80% cure rate) and amoxicillin (91.7% cure rate)3.

    Well tolerated:

    • Results from a five-day tolerance study in normal calves of 182-316kg body weight indicated that formulated ceftiofur sodium was well tolerated at over 50 times (55mg/kg/day) the recommended dose of 1.0 mg/kg/day for five consecutive days4.
    • Results from a five-day tolerance study in normal feeder pigs indicated that formulated ceftiofur was well tolerated when administered at 25mg/kg (more than 8 times the recommended daily dosage of 3.0mg/kg of body weight) for five consecutive days. Ceftiofur sodium administered intramuscularly to pigs produced no overt adverse signs of toxicity4.
  • Excenel RTU is an oily suspension containing 50mg/mL Ceftiofur hydrochloride.

Excenel RTU is packaged in a 100mL glass vial.

  • Shake the bottle for 20 to 30 seconds to re-suspend.

Cattle: Administer by intramuscular or subcutaneous injection into the anterior half of the neck. For bovine respiratory disease (BRD) and footrot - 1.0mg/kg (ie. 2mL/100kg). Treatment should be repeated every 24 hours for 3 treatments. Additional treatments should be given on days 4 and 5 for cattle that do not show a satisfactory response after the first 3 treatments. For acute post-partum metritis - 2.2mg/kg (4.4mL/100kg) at 24-hour intervals for 5 consecutive days.

Pigs: Administer intramuscularly at a dosage of 3.0mg/kg (ie. 3mL/50kg). Treatment should be repeated every 24 hours for 3 treatments.

Contents should be used within 42 days after the first dose is removed. Store at room temperature (30°C). Protect from freezing. Muscle discolouration in the area around the injection site may be observed for up to 11 days following the last injection.

  • Beta lactam antibiotics such as penicillins and cephalosporins may cause sensitisation following dermal or parenteral contact and, in previously sensitised (allergic) individuals, adverse reactions may result from such exposure. All individuals should avoid direct contact of Excenel RTU with the skin or mucous membranes. Avoid accidental self-injection. If this occurs seek medical advice.

Cattle and pigs producing meat or offal for human consumption must not be sold for slaughter either during treatment or within 2 days of cessation of last treatment.

No milk withholding period is required when the product is used according to label directions. Use of doses in excess of those recommended on the label may result in illegal drug residues in edible tissues.
